Intimate Glamour Photography
From LoveToKnow Photography
Intimate glamour photography is a photography style where a photographer works very closely with his or her model. The aim of the photo in this style is to make the client look as attractive or sexy as possible.
Intimate glamour work will often involve a certain amount of nudity. With this, privacy is of the utmost concern.
Get Started in Intimate Glamour Photography
If you're interested in professionally working in glamour photography, be forewarned it can be one of the hardest areas of photography to break into. Because of the trust that must be involved with intimate glamour photography, it can be hard to gain clients if you do not have a large body of work or recommendations.
Many photographers in the field start with apprenticeships under other glamour photographers. While doing this, budding photographers will build up their portfolio and eventually open their own studio.
The best tip for breaking into glamour work is by building up your portfolio. If you have a large body of work that you can show to potential clients, they'll feel more comfortable with working with you. A good place to start building a portfolio is with friends who would be comfortable helping you out.
Finding Clients
When you've built up a body of work (either through your own means or by an apprenticeship), you will want to start finding clients. But where to find them? Many glamour photographers find clients in the following ways:
- Advertisements in local papers
- Advertisements on internet sites
- Handing out flyers
- Advertising with modeling agencies/talent groups
- Trying to bring people into the studio from the street
- Networking with other photographers
The number one way to find clients is by having your clients spread your name around if they were pleased with your session. In this case, the clients will start finding you!
Always be sure to please a client you're working with as best as you can. Make sure they have your card when they leave. You never know what business they might bring in for you!
Photography Tips
When you're starting out, it is important to portray a particular point of view and talent to your client. If they don't feel comfortable with you and the quality of your work, the shoot will go poorly. Some tips on how to create the best photos possible:
- Be sure to keep the lines of communication open between yourself and your client. If the client has an idea for a pose, work with their idea. Reciprocally, if there is something the model is doing that does not work, be sure to respectfully communicate that and give her a new idea to work with.
- Always make sure your model is relaxed.
- Speak before hand with the client about what they feel their best assets are and try to play these assets up in your photographs. This will help the model feel better about the shoot.
- Make sure to have props at hand--different hats, pillows, sunglasses, etc. You never know what will work.
- Be aware of the lighting in the room. Anything too harsh will automatically spoil your photos and anything too dark will do the same.
- Continually shot as many frames as possible. This will give you the best odds of getting several great shots.
- If you're working with digital, stop halfway through the session to review the images with your model. You two can communicate from there where the rest of the shoot can go.
Making Your Model Comfortable
Obviously with intimate photography, it is easy for a model to feel tense and uncomfortable. Some tips on how to remedy this:
- Remind your model of why she has decided to come in today. Whether she is looking for work for her modeling career or photos for her husband, sometimes being reminded of her motivation is helpful.
- Have her breathe deeply through her mouth. Not only will she look 'sexier' but she'll hopefully feel more relaxed.
- Work with your model to find the best angles for her. Many women will know if they look better from a certain position.
- The best pose is always the natural one. If your model is nervous, let her spend some time around you and your studio without a camera pointed at her.
- For some clients, continually reviewing how the images look is necessary for them to feel comfortable enough to continue.
Retouching?
In the field of glamour work, retouching is a common occurrence. Retouching a photo simply means digitally altering an image to correct a 'flaw' such as removing a mole. With intimate glamour work, it's imperative to speak to the client in advance about retouching. If the model is comfortable with the idea, you can then alter the image. However, if the model is not okay with the idea, respect her wishes. What a photographer may see as a flaw may be the model's favorite feature!
