How to Take Your Own In the Game Shots

Taking action sports photographs is one of the most difficult things to do as a photographer. The following tips can help you capture the action as it has happening:

  • Get the Right Camera – While many genres of photography can be perfected with inexpensive equipment, action photography really requires a powerful camera. If you are using a 35mm camera, you are going to need one with a fast shutter speed and a high quality auto focus system so your shots stay in focus.
  • Get a Great Lens – While you might be able to get pretty close to the action, you won't be able to run around on the field during the game. In other words, a great action photographer needs a great zoom lens. Depending on the sport, you might be able to get away with a 200mm lens, but if you're shooting football or soccer and can't get that close, you will likely need something like a 400mm lens.
  • Get as Close as You Can – No matter how good your photography equipment, it is imperative to get close to the action. If you're at a basketball or a soccer game, try to get right up to the sidelines. If you're at a baseball game, try to get behind home plate or near the dugouts. The better your position to the action, the more likely you will be to capture memorable shots.
  • Pull the Trigger– The decisive moment for any action photographer is the moment when he or she opens the shutter. But no matter how fast your camera's shutter is, there is an old adage that all sports photographers live by: "If you see the play, your camera missed it." That being said, a great photographer knows the importance of anticipating the shot before it happens. Learning the game that you are covering inside and out helps as well.

Study Up, Grab Your Gear, and Hit the Game

After you look through some great images for inspiration, you will likely want to try to take some of your own. Try to save up for the best camera and lens you can afford, and then start going to games and shoot as many photos as you can. However, in action photography, you take many more shots than you can use, so if anything, you will learn how to be patient as you practice your craft.
