Female Photography

From LoveToKnow Photography

Female photography is an art that has become increasingly popular in the last century. Whether the shots are of seductive women in bikinis or close-ups of a girl’s sultry eyes, every aspect of female photography is in huge demand.

About Female Photography

The female body has long been a desired subject in the world of photography. This is due in large part to the subjective nature of a woman’s allure. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Varying female forms, from a Vegas showgirl to a pregnant mother, have the ability to capture the interest of viewers.

A woman’s individual body parts are often the subject of female photography, including her:

  • Eyes
  • Ears
  • Mouth
  • Nose
  • Neck
  • Breasts
  • Legs
  • Stomach
  • Hair
  • Lips

The contour of a woman’s body, the expression on her face, and the way she moves are all visually stimulating, which is why many photographers enjoy using females as the subjects of their pictures. A stunning photo of a woman can peak a viewer’s curiosity and entice his imagination. This in turn generates interest in female photography and the people responsible for snapping the shots.

Female Photography Genres

Contrary to popular belief, a picture of a fully clothed woman can be just as engaging as one taken of a half-naked female. It simply depends on what context the image is being used.

The following female photography genres prove that women are powerful subjects in the photo industry:

Portrait

Famous portrait photographers have a gift for bringing out different facets of their subjects’ personalities. This is the case with legendary female photographer Gertrude Kasebier. The world-renowned artist was one of the most sought after and influential American portrait photographers of the early 20th century. What’s more, she loved taking pictures of women, especially mothers of Native American descent. Kasebier is known for stripping her subjects down to the bare minimum to better concentrate on their face or stature.

Commercial

Sex sells. Consequently, female photography is a huge part of commercial sales. It’s easy to see how vital images of women are in advertisements -- from billboards promoting lingerie to posters with women sporting the latest hair and make-up trends. Females are also important subjects in ads that pitch public awareness issues, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Breast cancer awareness
  • Women in the workplace
  • Equal rights issues

Fashion

Fashion and female photography go hand-in-hand. The two are so intertwined it’s hard to figure out where one ends and the other begins. Women dominate the fashion industry. In fact, some of the most beautiful women in the world pose for fashion shoots either on the runway or in a traditional photo studio. Regardless of where the pictures are snapped, the focus is generally on an item the female model is wearing. It could be something as mundane as winter boots or as sultry as a lace slip. No matter what the item, a good photographer will get his female subject to enhance it in a way that attracts the most viewers.

Glamour/Pin-Up

When people hear the term "female photography" most automatically think of nude or semi-nude images of buxom women striking seductive poses. While some pin-up shots leave very little to the imagination, there are some photographers who know how to make tasteful glamour shots even more appealing to the masses.

The 1950s saw the advent of nude photography and the exploration of women’s sensuality. Today, you can find hundreds of pin-up photographers who specialize in taking shots of scantily clad women in your local yellow pages. The same is true for intimate glamour shots in which women have the option of posing with a friend or spouse in an effort to produce private boudoir shots.

Female photography is not all about distasteful shots of half-clothed women in raunchy poses. Rather, the female body lends itself to a variety of photo genres which paint women in a flattering light.
